In several of the cases listed here, the game's developers released the source code expressly to prevent their work from becoming abandonware. Such source code is often released under varying (free and non-free, commercial and non-commercial) software licenses to the games' communities or the public; artwork and data are often released under a different license than the source code, as the copyright situation is different or more complicated. The source code may be pushed by the developers to public repositories (e.g. SourceForge or GitHub), or given to selected game community members, or sold with the game, or become available by other means. The game may be written in an interpreted language such as BASIC or Python, and distributed as raw source code without being compiled; early software was often distributed in text form, as in the book BASIC Computer Games. In some cases when a game's source code is not available by other means, the game's community "reconstructs" source code from compiled binary files through time-demanding reverse engineering techniques.

When much time and manual work is invested, it is still possible to recover or restore a source code variant which replicates the program's functions accurately from the binary program. Techniques used to accomplish this are decompiling, disassembling, and reverse engineering the binary executable. This approach typically does not result in the exact original source code but rather a divergent version, as a binary program does not contain all of the information originally carried in the source code. For example, comments and function names cannot be restored if the program was compiled without additional debug information.

It is usually recommended to use the online generator on the website instead of the download or source code versions of the randomizer. The video tutorial is also available as a walk through for the website. The Readme explains what the different options do. You can also check out the Changelog to see what changes have happened between randomizer versions. Recent Dev and Dev-R versions are also available on the website.

Once everything is set, simply click PATCH ROM! The patching process uses your device's CPU, so how long this takes is dependent on your hardware. Once the process is complete, a download will begin. Save this new rom file separately from the original rom, and now it's time to proceed to the Playing the Randomizer section.

As of version 4.14 of the randomizer, the source code versions of the randomizer require Node.js to be installed. (Please skip this step for the executable version of the randomizer found on the website's download page.)

Please ensure Node and/or Python are properly installed per the instructions above before downloading the randomizer. Once your computer is prepared, you can follow the instructions for the standalone download version or the source code and Dev version of the randomizer.

You can download either the release source code, or the development (Dev) branch source code to run the randomizer. Most users will want to use the standalone download for the release version, so this section will focus on running the latest development version from source code. You must have the latest Node.js LTS version and Python 3.6 or higher installed for the source code version of the randomizer to work.

Locate the zip file you just downloaded in your Downloads folder, or wherever you saved it. Right-click the file and click Extract All... and extract the files from the zip archive.4 A new folder should appear which may contain another folder inside. Open the folders until you see a folder with many folders and files inside. Locate the Gui.py file inside and Double-click it to launch the randomizer.5 The first time you run the randomizer many files need to be downloaded from the internet. Wait patiently as they download.6 This process will be faster every time you run the randomizer after this since it will only have to download the files once. Even if you download a new version it will be slightly faster as most of the files will be located in the Node.js cache and most will simply be used from there.

You can alternatively use Git to download the source code. This is the easiest way to keep up to date with the latest changes. We have a guide on using GitKraken, a GUI for git that many of the developers use if you want to try to download the source code this way. You still need to install the other software mentioned above.

If you are already part of a family membership, it is not possible to purchase or change to an individual membership. Additionally, download codes for individual memberships cannot be redeemed by someone who is already covered by a family membership. However, if someone else in your family group purchased the family membership, you can leave the family group and purchase an individual membership for yourself.

It is not possible to change from an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to a Nintendo Switch Online membership. However, once the membership term ends, the user is free to choose any membership plan at that time.

@Highwinter As a North American I hope for a free download, but I completely understand what you are saying haha. Europe is finally getting treated after years of neglect. But please understand that us North Americans are a selfish, greedy lot. M'wa ha ha haaaaaa.

I got the NES version for this on my ambassador program which is obviously the better way for your nostalgia rush but it's free and you can't beat a free game even if it's a redundant port of an old classic.Just see it as a little time capsule that shows off how amazing the GBC was cuz it could 'handle' an NES port!

There's a lot of moaning about how America haven't had similar offers but have you seen the European Club Nintendo gifts recently? It's mostly vouchers and cases for Wii/DSi, where as NOA get free games all the time!
